Biography

Antonio Allegri, called Correggio (born in Correggio, near Reggio Emilia, around 1489; died in Correggio in 1534), presumably trained locally but became acquainted through travels (?) with works by Mantegna and Leonardo da Vinci. After 1519 he was in Parma, where he worked on large fresco decorations (San Giovanni Evangelista; cathedral) and panel paintings for the courts in Mantua and Ferrara. In his paintings, the forms are colourfully blended into an atmospheric whole.
