Biography

Sebastiano Luciani, called Sebastiano del Piombo (born in Venice around 1485; died in Rome in 1547), a successful painter in Venice, left in 1511 in the entourage of the banker Agostino Chigi for Rome, where he patterned himself after Michelangelo, who repeatedly supported him with drawings. In 1531 he was appointed papal 'piombatore' (keeper of the seal, hence the affix to his name). Famed mainly for his vivid portraits.
