The date of birth of Bartholomeus Engels is not known. 1656 he is documented as a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem. Evidence of his existence can still be found in 1702. Presumably, Engels was not only active as a painter, but also in other professions. He concentrated on landscapes with figures and genre scenes that were easy to sell.
