Biography

Gerlach Flicke is first documented in 1545 in London with the portrait of Archbishop Cranmer dated to that year, and is also recorded as being there in the following years. On 11 February 1558, his wife Katharina certified his will, in which there is mention of property in Osnabrück. In an odd portrait diptych in miniature format on paper or parchment mounted on wood panels (London, National Portrait Gallery), the artist depicted himself in 1554 together with the pirate Henry Strangwish in the roles of painter and lute player on the occasion of their shared imprisonment in the Tower of London.
