Biography

According to Vasari, Jacopo Carrucci, called Pontormo (born in Pontorme, near Empoli, in 1494; died in Florence in 1556 or 1557), trained in Florence under Leonardo da Vinci, Andrea del Sarto, and others. He is documented with independent works beginning in 1513. He worked primarily for the Medici, for whom he also painted frescoes (Poggio a Caiano). His very personal style is the quintessence of Mannerism, in terms of both form and colouring.
