Biography

1897-1899 Applied Arts School, Karlsruhe. Friendship with Rudolf Levy. 1904-1905 spends the winter months in Berlin. Accepted into the 'Berlin Secession'. 1905 moves to Paris. 1906 becomes a friend of Henri Matisse. 1908-1911 founding and directorship of the Académie Matisse. Travels with Matisse to Germany (1909 and 1910). 1914 moves to Beilstein (Württemberg). 1915-1935 summer vacations in Langenargen on Lake Constance. 1916 moves to Berlin. Participates in exhibitions of the 'Free Secession'. 1922-1926 travels to Italy. 1927 major exhibition in Kaiserslautern. 1935 honorary director of the 'Villa Romana' in Florence. 1944 moves to Montagnola (Ticino). 1951 meets with Matisse in Nice. 1958 travels to Greece.
