History

Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior are, according to extrabiblical tradition, the names of the three "astrologers" (literally magicians) from the East who, according to Matthew's account, were led by a star to the birthplace of Christ in Bethlehem. Together, the wise men, also known as the "Three Wise Men (or Magi)", paid homage to the Child Jesus and offered him gold, incense and myrrh as gifts (cf. Mt 2:1−12; Ps 72:10; Is 60:3).
