About the Acquisition

The architect Karl Jonas Mylius (1839–1883) and his partner Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli ran a successful architectural firm in Frankfurt from 1870 to 1881. Among their most important commissions was the design for the Central Cemetery in Vienna; in Frankfurt itself they built the Hotel Frankfurter Hof in 1875/76. One year before his death, Mylius donated two works by the painter Georg Melchior Kraus to the Städel, along with permission for their sale, should the need arise.
