About the Work

The identity of the elegant lady remains an enigma. Her rigorous posture and her aloof gaze contradict the stereotype of the exotic, libertine beauty. The four fish behind her seem odd; their fins form an aureole around her embellished head. In this painting, Klewer combines his interest in naturalist representation with the severity of New Objectivity and a surreal pictorial vocabulary. After his death, the artist, who rarely exhibited during his lifetime, faded into oblivion.
