Biography

Bartolomeo Brandini, called Baccio Bandinelli (born in Florence between 1488 and 1493; died in Florence in 1560), the son of a goldsmith, was trained as a sculptor in the workshop of Giovanni Francesco Rustici. After 1512, he was active mainly in Florence under the patronage of the Medici but also in Rome and Genoa (Andrea Doria). He was also extremely productive as a draughtsman. His monumental style was in deliberate competition with that of Michelangelo.
