Biography

1892-1896 mercantile training in Karlsruhe. 1897-1900 studies painting under Hans Thoma and others at the Grossherzoglich Badische Akademie der Künste, Karlsruhe. Travels to Switzerland and Paris. 1900-1901 atelier in Paris; becomes acquainted with Julius Meier-Graefe. 1902 moves to Stuttgart; master pupil of Count Leopold von Kalckreuth. Meets Hermann Haller. 1905-1906 first one-man shows in Karlsruhe and Weimar. 1906 travels to Norway with Leopold Ziegler. 1908-1913 lives in Paris. 1910 first trip to India. 1914 exhibition at Paul Cassirer's, Berlin. 1917 released from French internment camps into Switzerland. 1919 returns to Berlin. 1921-1934 professorship at the art academy, the Kunsthochschule, in Berlin-Charlottenburg. 1927 co-founder of the 'Baden Secession'. Travels to the United States. From 1931 on regular summer stays near Lugano. 1939 exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. 1941 returns to Berlin. 1945 appointed to the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg. 1950 president of the German artists' league, the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
