Biography

Giorgio Vasari (born in Arezzo in 1511; died in Florence in 1574), received initial training in Arezzo under the stained-glass painter Guillaume de Marcillat, then lived from 1524 in Florence. He was variously employed by the Medici (Palazzo Vecchio, 1555-1572), but was also active in many other cities (Rome, Bologna, Venice, Naples). On his journeys, he deliberately collected information for his 'Lives of the Artists' (1550; reworked 1568).
